A dramatic victory for Reims as they edged out Montpellier 1-0 in a fiercely contested Ligue 1 match at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II on October 19, 2019.
Reims, playing at home, controlled a large chunk of the game with 42% possession, but Montpellier did an excellent job getting around their defence and creating chances. Despite having 8 corner kicks, Montpellier failed to convert, whilst Reims scored in the second half thanks to a well-placed strike from Y. Abdelhamid in the 2nd minute.
The match was full of tension, with both teams pressing hard and making substitutions throughout the game, with particular highlights being the introduction of M. Munetsi and M. Doumbia in the 78th minute.
Reims, clearly determined to get the win, kept their composure despite Montpellier's relentless attacking pressure and effective substitutions to keep the momentum. Montpellier, seemingly outmatched in the final third, lacked the finishing touch they needed. Their overall attacking play was impressive, but their 58% possession didn't translate into the goals they desperately sought.
The final whistle brought joyous celebrations for Reims and a frustrating end for Montpellier, a game that will be remembered for its intense battle for possession and well-fought substitutions.
