What a match! The Oakland Roots roared to victory over the Sacramento Republic, 2-1, in a thrilling USL Championship clash at Laney College Football Field.
The Roots came out firing, taking the lead early in the first half with a goal by Q. Amarikwa. Sacramento Republic responded strongly, though, equalizing with a goal from D. Formella. The first half ended all square at 1-1.
The second half saw both teams push hard for the winning goal. Oakland Roots ultimately secured the victory with a second goal by E. Klimenta in the 63rd minute.
The Roots' approach was aggressive and attacking, with a strong emphasis on building play from the back. The substitutes made a significant difference to the Oakland Roots' play. The Republic's strategy, though focused on counter-attacks, was thwarted somewhat by Oakland Roots' early and sustained pressure. There were some great substitutions by both sides that really changed the tempo of the game, and some strong individual performances.
A late yellow card for Pennanen from the Republic added drama to the closing minutes, but it wasn't enough to prevent Oakland's triumph. What a match!
