What a dominant performance from Montpellier tonight at the Stade de la Mosson! They completely outplayed Stade Brestois 29, winning 3-0.
Montpellier looked incredibly sharp from the start, controlling possession (44%) and creating chances. They took the lead early, scoring a penalty goal in the 17th minute, with Savanier getting the goal. Then they added a stunning own goal from the opposition in the 4th minute, a very unusual event in this league! In the second half, with a substitution or two from Montpellier, they added a beautiful third goal in the 54th minute through Wahi.
Stade Brestois, despite having 56% of the ball possession, struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Their shots were few and far between (10 total), and they couldn't break through Montpellier's solid defence. They were also guilty of some sloppy play, leading to several yellow cards (2).
The most exciting moment arguably was the substitution frenzy in the 70's, with both sides making quick changes to shift up their attacks. Montpellier's substitutions definitely energized their attack, and, as the score shows, it paid off tremendously.
Both teams approached the game with different strategies. Montpellier seemed to focus on maintaining possession, keeping the ball and patiently building chances. Stade Brestois, on the other hand, perhaps tried to exploit any openings on the counter attack, but their efforts were thwarted by Montpellier's defense.
All in all, a convincing victory for Montpellier. A great night for the home fans, and a tough night for Stade Brestois!
