Wow, what a dominant performance from the Portland Timbers tonight! They completely outplayed the San Jose Earthquakes, running out 3-0 winners at Providence Park.
The Timbers were the aggressors from the start, with a strong focus on controlling possession – holding a solid 46% throughout the match. They took a well-earned 3-0 lead.
The first goal came in the 46th minute when Portland’s J. Niezgoda scored, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Another goal followed shortly after by Niezgoda in the 52nd minute. The Earthquakes struggled to create many scoring opportunities, and, frankly, the Timbers' defense was rock solid.
The Earthquakes did have a few chances, but they were unable to capitalize on them, and were frustrated by some very strong fouls by the home side, which saw the home side receive a couple of yellow cards for fouls. The Timbers were clearly the more clinical side in front of goal, especially with their goals coming via substitutions. Portland’s substitutes delivered in big ways.
The final goal in the 86th minute added to Portland's commanding win. It was a fantastic display of teamwork, and a deserved victory for the Timbers. The Earthquakes, despite some early pressure, were ultimately unable to mount a comeback. It was clear that the Timbers were determined to make a strong statement.
